Killer Among Us 3D: Copycat Culture
This morning, Steam managed to completely ruin my good mood by having the audacity to advertise an upcoming game called ‘Killer Among Us 3D’ to me. I thought to myself; must be a joke, right? Must be a mistake. But no, Killer Among Us 3D is basically Among Us, but in 3D. Yeah.
Killer Among Us 3D Is Not Okay
Let me start by saying there’s nothing wrong with being inspired. It’s totally fine to look at older games and learn something from them while developing your own. But if you copy the concept, the gameplay, the overall look, the theme, and even the bloody name, that’s when you go too far.
The developers of Killer Among Us 3D state that their game is not an Among Us copy. The fact that they feel the need to write that on Steam says enough, but if you’re not convinced, check this Steam discussion.
Among Us & Among Us Compared
All right, let’s be fair here. Killer Among Us 3D takes place in a spaceship with 4 to 12 players, and one is a Killer. Among Us, on the other hand, features 4 to 10 players and at least one Imposter. Totally different.
Also, you can report the bodies but I haven’t seen the words ‘Emergency Meeting’ yet. And it’s called ‘Ship Challenges’ here, not ‘Tasks’. You can also close doors & stuff as a Killer, but many games feature closable doors. The similar voting and chat system are totally coincidental too. Naturally, the coloured spacesuits are just a fashion statement that’s completely unrelated to Among Us.
All right, enough with the sarcasm. Killer Among Us 3D has literally copied everything from Among Us. EVERY. SINGLE. THING.
Steam Is Also Not Okay
So… This is the copycat developer’s fault right?
Well yes, but Steam is supporting it. It would be great if Steam did not allow an obvious copycat to publish their game on the platform. This is not fair towards InnerSloth.
Let’s support the developer’s who actually make an effort to create amazing new games!
